Sessions will focus on techniques for an effective job search, enhancing academic portfolios, how to manage a career change, creating opportunities for PhD's, and managing personal finance for early career professionals!

SESSION A: How to Create Your Own Opportunity
Michelle Erickson, Founder of “PhD’s At Work”.
Michelle Erickson is founder of PhDs At Work, connecting PhDs in industry and those who would like to follow in their path. Erickson has industry-
spanning experience working with financial services, media and entertainment, and both the non-profit and philanthropic sectors. She has also held
teaching appointments at New York University and Stern College
for Women. Erickson holds a PhD in French Literature and Performance Studies from New York University.
There’s no well-trodden path for PhDs to follow as they transition to working in industry and other non-academic sectors. The good news? That means you
have free reign to determine the next step in your professional career path. The challenge? It’s up to you to create your own opportunities. Together we’ll
walk through three strategies for envisioning new career possibilities and the practical tools you need to create your own opportunity.

SESSION A: Academic Portfolios to Enhance Scholarly Careers

What’s an academic portfolio? Why do I need one? What’s included in it? This hands-on workshop helps you explore the growing importance of academic
portfolios and best practices for using them strategically to develop your career as a researcher/scholar and educator. As part of this exploration, we
will each create a draft sketch of our own academic portfolio.
SESSION B: Career Shift: When It’s Time for a Change

Few people have the lifetime careers of our parents or grandparents – the kind where you go to work for an organization, work hard to achieve increasing levels of responsibility over a 30-year career, and finally retire with a handshake and a gold watch. Today’s workforce changes jobs every 2-3 years and careers multiple times in a lifetime.
This workshop helps you to manage (and maintain control of) the process of career shifting – so that the changes you make are based on your conscious choices instead of happenstance or the whims of others. In this workshop you will learn about:
· The three most important elements for success in changing careers
· A tool to evaluate your desired career shift, what it will take, and it’s viability
· Tips to create a resume that markets your new career identity
· A technique for surfacing new opportunities within your desired career
