My book, God Is a Symbol of Something True, has been published by O-Books. http://www.o-books.com/index.php

The central claim of this book is that everything is fundamentally all right, in spite or because of the fact that there are important things that one cares about deeply, over which one has no control. This is a way of understanding religion that rejects the false dilemma of choosing either literalistic theism or scientism. It involves thinking through, non-dogmatically, the following controversial claims:

The Biblical account of God's personality is a symbol of the personal significance, for each of us, of the ways in which we are helpless and yet safe.

We should hope that life is just as fresh and astonishing at the end as at the beginning.

We should not hope to be resurrected on Judgment Day.

The meaningfulness of life depends on the fact that we are in control of some important things but not in control of others.

We are in control of whether or not we act morally; we are not in control of our own salvation.

Salvation is the realization that everything really is fundamentally all right.

Ever since it was first published in 1999, Nobel laureate J. M. Coetzee's novel Disgrace has provoked controversy. Set in post-apartheid South Africa, it follows Prof. David Lurie as he encounters disgrace through his sexual exploitation of a student and then through the shocking gang-rape of his only daughter. The novel's uncompromising portrayal of the "new" South Africa outraged many, who found the book regressive, even racist. It also challenged readers worldwide to confront its hard questions. This first book of essays devoted to the novel ambitiously brings together criticism and pedagogy. The ten critical essays and eight essays on teaching Disgrace grapple with the ethical issues the novel so provocatively raises: rape, gender, race, animal rights. Disgrace is widely taught in colleges and universities and read in book clubs; the debates it has given rise to will take on fresh life with the release of the upcoming film starring John Malkovich. Unusually, the eighteen contributors to the collection are all faculty members or graduates of the same institution, the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands, and have worked together closely in crafting their essays over the past two years. The volume will be exceptionally useful to teachers of literature, philosophy, and South African culture, to book club leaders, and to all readers of Coetzee. Contributors: Nancy Best, James Boobar, Bradley Butterfield, Jane Creighton, Matthew Gray, Pat Harrigan, Gary Hawkins, Rabbi Patricia Karlin-Neumann, Daniel Kiefer, Bill McDonald, Michael G. McDunnah, Kim Middleton, Kevin O'Neill, Raymond Obstfeld, Kathy Ogren, Kenneth Reinhard, Sandra D. Shattuck, Patricia Casey Sutcliffe, Julie Townsend. Bill McDonald is emeritus professor of English at the University of Redlands, Redlands, California.

New from KSU Press: Family Letters of Salmon P. Chase

From The Kent State University Press <http://upress.kent.edu/> , “Spur Up Your Pegasus” <http://upress.kent.edu/books/McClure_J.htm> (2009) edited by James P. McClure, Peg A. Lamphier, and Erika M. Kreger is a fascinating collection of correspondence between a prominent father and his accomplished daughters.

Married three times, Salmon P. Chase lost four children in infancy. Two daughters survived to adulthood and were their father’s companions during his service as a U.S. senator from Ohio, governor of Ohio, Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of the Treasury, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Kate, his older daughter, acted as an unofficial political advisor to her father and was a prominent Washington, D.C., hostess, while Nettie eschewed a life in the public eye, becoming a wife, mother, and creator of children’s books.

Often separated from his family due to the demands of his career as a lawyer and antislavery politician, Chase maintained his relationship with his daughters by the frequent exchange of letters. Chase’s letters show an ambitious father trying to school his daughters from afar, admonishing them to study and encouraging them to develop self-discipline and personal responsibility. The letters in this volume—from Chase to his daughters, from his daughters to him and to each other—span from when Kate was a young child and Nettie not yet born to their father’s death in 1873.

This collection of correspondence, many letters previously unpublished, stresses familial relationships, the daughters’ education, and the role of women in nineteenth-century America. “Spur Up Your Pegasus” <http://upress.kent.edu/books/McClure_J.htm> provides important insights into the personal lives and private thoughts of a prominent political family.

James P. McClure is a senior associate editor of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson at Princeton University and was previously with the editorial staff of the Salmon P. Chase Papers in Claremont, California. Peg A. Lamphier is a lecturer in history at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is the author of Kate Chase and William Sprague: Politics and Gender in a Civil War Marriage. Erika M. Kreger is currently Graduate School Director of Development at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her work on nineteenth-century women’s literary history includes articles in Nineteenth-Century Literature, Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature, and Studies in American Humor.

Due to a fairly sudden and unexpected employment opportunity, I will be moving to Denver, Colorado to be the Director of Technical Programs for the American Water Works Association. I start that position on September 28. I will suspend conducting any and all business as Natural Strategies Consulting, effective September 24.

In my new position I will oversee the activity within the Technical & Education Council, which covers a very broad scope of subjects. For those people working for drinking water providers and related consulting firms, I strongly encourage you to be involved with AWWA. I hope to continue a work relationship with many of you in this new capacity. I also hope to continue the many important personal relationships with friends from my 21 years in California, including my work for Three Valleys and Metropolitan Water Districts, and volunteer involvement in several other water, environmental, and community activities.

Alex Couwenberg: Arcade

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 4th, 6-9pm
Gallery hours: Wed – Fri, 11-5 / Sat, 9-5 / Sun & Mon, 11-4

Laguna Beach, CA – Peter Blake Gallery is proud to present ARCADE, an exhibition of new paintings by Southern California artist Alex Couwenberg.

‘Couwenberg is a gleaner of shapes, savoring their implicit allusions and relationships, and he uses his canvasses as Petrie dishes, letting his forms interact with each other like microorganisms. Many of his paintings feature television or soap dish shapes, which he layers like theatrical scrims, to reveal previous stages of the works’ creation. His recent paintings are among his most sumptuous and refined, featuring forms that suggest lozenges, wedges, or flippers from pinball machines, arranged in dynamic symmetries. (Another family of shapes his work implies: car taillights). The contrast of textures between these glossy windows and the spans of paint surrounding them can be riveting.’ George Melrod, ARTltd Magazine, 2009

Known for his non-objective paintings that nod to the ideas of mid century design, Alex Couwenberg continues his new work in the spirit of modernism while forging ahead with a new contemporary visual language. His connection with mentor Karl Benjamin was instrumental in the development of Couwenberg’s painting style and process. An additive and reductive series of moves on canvas, creates multilayered environments that are deep and sensual. His paintings have recently been included in the permanent collections of the Laguna Art Museum and the Claremont Museum of Art. Couwenberg was recently awarded the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Award for his achievements in painting. This exhibition marks Couwenberg’s third solo show with Peter Blake Gallery.

CGU student Guille Esquivel and Mayrely Perez take their love for their countries’ national pastime to produce their first-ever book called Out of the Park. Esquivel is Mexican-American while Pérez is Dominican and their bilingual book (English and Spanish) takes an exciting look at some Latino baseball players’ personal lives. Written to allow the diehard fans to casual fans an inside look about their favorite players’ most intimate moments, secrets and interests. Esquivel and Perez’ book includes biographies of some of MLBs biggest stars, up and coming stars as well as Cuban baseball players who have never played in the majors. These players open up to share their innermost details which include José Contreras’ practice of Santería, Nelson Cruz’s passion for flying, and Adrian Gonzalez’s addiction to his mother’s cooking.

In this current climate where negative news surpasses positive one in the world of baseball; Out of the Park is definitely a breath of fresh air. Esquivel and Pérez go where no man has gone before in bringing to the public a human side of these ballplayers that often goes unnoticed. They offer a women’s perspective to a male dominated game. The end result is a unique book that should definitely be on every baseball fan’s reading list.

Out of the Park is available for purchase at www.lulu.com and will be hitting bookstores in the near future.
