From the back cover of The Chopsticks-Fork Principle x 2, A Bilingual Reader by Cathy Bao Bean and Dongdong Chen

"Congratulations—I believe you have just broken the enigma of how to teach language and culture at the same time!" Glenn Nordin, Foreign Language and Area Advisor, Department of Defense.

“Are you a Chinese living in the United States, an American learning Chinese, a Chinese student learning English, or a Chinese-American who is learning Chinese language and culture? If the answer is yes, you will enjoy this book and also learn something new from it. It is indeed ingenious for Bean and Chen to produce this hybrid of pleasure reading and language textbook that will help us learn both languages and understand the cultural differences at the same time. This book will serve as a model for learning Chinese language and culture.” Dr. Tao-Chung Yao, University of Hawaii, leading author of Integrated Chinese.

<<筷子叉子双管齐下>>是一本很有特色的双语读物,英文原文隽永有趣,中文翻译文笔流畅,对学习中文和英文的学生都是一本学习第二语言和文化的难得的好教材。
“This is an excellent book for students learning the English as well as Chinese language and culture. It is distinguished by an entertaining and thought-provoking English text while providing a Chinese translation that is both expressive and fluid.” Dr. Wayne He, US Military Academy at West Point, leading author of Chinese for Tomorrow.

“This bilingual reader is highly recommended as the most original Chinese/English textbook to arrive on the North American scene for many years. Perceptive, challenging, and highly entertaining, it is designed for advanced learners of either language as well as anyone with an interest in a fresh approach to inter-cultural translation. The text provides humorous, yet probing, vignettes drawn from the real-life experiences of a Chinese who emigrated to the United States at an early age and constitutes a practical guide to negotiating the inter-cultural. It should be required reading insofar as the cultural axis of the world shifts rapidly Eastward in the 21st century. Each lesson is richly annotated, providing vocabulary lists and a variety of exercises. From both the socio-cultural and linguistic points of view, this textbook is a breakthrough.” Dr. Terry Russell, Asian Studies Centre, University of Manitoba.

DEE DEE DOES UTOPIA

by Deborah Faye Lawrence

Marquand Books, Seattle, 2008
Available now from D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, New York
ISBN 978-0-9778028-4-5

What does utopia look like to you? Four years ago, artist Deborah Faye Lawrence conducted a survey to find out. From hundreds of queries, she received 15,000 words in response, which she visually illuminated in mixed-media collages that depict twenty-six versions of utopia. This hard-cover volume brings elements from Lawrence’s survey together with historical and literary utopian models. The full-color imagery links many notions of idealized environments—from the natural to the fabricated—layered in surprising formations and integrated with text, evoking medieval illuminated manuscripts.

Xlibris, 2006
James B. Jamieson and James R. Cooley
MA, Political Science, 1958

An off-the-wall comic novel, GAASCRU pokes fun at professional sports, political intrigues, alien visits, power brokers and many other current issues. Set in 2012, the novel follows the story of a multi-billion dollar corporation that helps elect a football hero to the presidency. The plot twists and turns as it follows an evil scheme hatched by the corporation and sports-crazed extraterrestrials to sell earthlings away to a distant planet. Ed Asner comments that “Rarely have I been entertained and laughed out loud reading a book. Perhaps I’m a grouch, but GAASCRU delighted me with its vitality and uniqueness.”

In October 1993, 12-year-old Polly Klaas was abducted from her home and murdered. When it was revealed that her killer had a history of committing violent crimes, public outrage led to the passing of California’s “Three Strikes Law,” which imposes lifetime sentences on repeat offenders. By 1997, nearly half of the states and the federal government had followed suit. Almost 14 years later, the public remains sharply divided over the Three Strikes movement. Do the laws really prevent crime? Or do they unfairly punish some nonviolent offenders?

Jennifer E. Walsh, Ph.D., associate professor of political science at Azusa Pacific University, examines these provocative questions in her new book, Three Strikes Laws. “After researching California’s Three Strikes Law for more than a decade, I found that much of the literature on the Three Strikes movement was either slanted in a particular direction or too narrowly focused,” said Walsh. To achieve a more balanced view, Walsh analyzed the movement’s historical development and provides an in-depth examination of its rationale and consequences. The book provides detail about various three strikes statutes adopted across the nation, and the controversies surrounding them.

“My hope is that many of the current misconceptions about the laws will be corrected,” said Walsh. She also hopes future policy discussions about three strikes reform “will be grounded in accurate understanding of what the laws entail and how they operate under real world conditions.”

More than a decade after the tragic murder that sparked the Three Strikes movement, the nation remains divided over its effectiveness. Walsh’s book offers a clear, comprehensive overview of the movement, helping readers to understand one of the most controversial criminal justice developments of our time.
