Emma Smith to 'Johnny Lingo' - Sunstone to shine light on Mormon women By Peggy Fletcher Stack The Salt Lake Tribune Updated: 08/07/2009 03:37:00 PM MDT
Those who know Mary Ellen Robertson will not be surprised that she chose "celebrating Mormon women's contribution" as the theme of her first Sunstone Symposium.
After all, Robertson studied English and journalism at Brigham Young University during the heyday of the school's feminist activism in the 1990s. She later became the first Mormon in Claremont Graduate University's women's studies and religion program.
"Sunstone represented my first opportunity to use that master's degree in a setting where I could do work in Mormon women's studies," says Robertson, who was hired last year to coordinate the symposium, an independent forum of Mormon thought. " Sunstone magazine has had some special issues on the topic, but it's never been a symposium topic before. It's kind of exciting." During the annual three-day conference -- which starts Wednesday -- more than two dozen presenters will focus on women's issues within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Topics include a look at Emma Smith, wife of Mormon founder Joseph Smith, and how she coped with grief, loss and trauma; a panel of stay-at-home moms discussing their experience, joys and trade-offs; analysis of the role of the late Elaine Cannon, an LDS women's leader who championed traditional roles even as she exemplified a more progressive style; blogging about motherhood; the diminishing importance of Mormon midwives in the 20th century; and whether Heavenly Mother is a memberof the Godhead.
Holly Welker will look at the 1969 LDS film "Johnny Lingo," which tells the story of how a suitor enhanced the self-worth of his future wife by paying an exorbitant dowry -- eight cows, rather than the typical one or two. The film has been used in church classes for decades as evidence of a wise, compassionate story of male sensitivity to female identity.
"Holly will apply a feminist lens to some of the film's intended and unintended messages," Robertson says. "It will look at how you measure a woman's worth, and it ain't necessarily in cows."
In addition to the women's sessions, Sunstone offers its traditional smorgasbord of topics, including how 12 questionable teachings have crept into LDS beliefs; supporting special-needs children and young adults in the church; Mormon families' adventures in and out of Africa from 1929 to 2009; and what Toyota could teach organized religion.
"We have the usual favorites, 'Why We Stay' and 'Pillars of My Faith,' to explore people's reasons for remaining committed to Mormonism," Robertson says. "There's still something for everyone at Sunstone's intellectual and spiritual buffet."

LEVITICUS: The Priestly Laws and Prohibitions from the Perspective of Ancient Near East and Africa Johnson M. Kimuhu, Ph.D. in Religion (Hebrew Bible), 2007.
In this extensive study Johnson M. Kimuhu examines copiously the formulation, transmission and function of the Levitical laws. In an important widening of the application of these laws, Kimuhu not only examines these Hebrew laws in their ancient Near Eastern context, but goes beyond the legal and sociological alignments and elicits theological implications. Furthermore, he looks at the implications for understanding these Hebrew laws for an African appropriation.
